PHP and JKUAT Launch Program to Strengthen Maternal and Newborn Care Across Kenya

Peabody Health Philanthropies (PHP) has partnered with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology through DHARC-JKUAT to launch a quality improvement program focused on maternal and newborn care. About 400 clinicians across six hospitals in Kisumu and Kilifi counties will take part in six rounds of realistic EQIS cases and evidence-based feedback over 24 months.

How the Kenya Program Works

Variation in clinical decisions can affect the safety, consistency, and efficiency of maternal and newborn care. The PHP-JKUAT partnership addresses that variation through repeated measurement, evidence-based learning, and local ownership across six rounds.

The program gives clinicians a practical way to review their decisions, learn from evidence, and improve over time. This approach is important in maternal and newborn care, where clinical decisions can have immediate consequences for patients and families.

The program is now in its first learning round. Nurses, clinical officers, medical officers, and specialists are completing the initial scenarios, receiving private feedback after every submitted question, and establishing the baseline needed to measure improvement over time.

Kenyan physicians developed 36 maternal and newborn scenarios for the program. Each case reflects national guidelines and the resources available at participating facilities. This keeps the scoring and feedback relevant to clinical decisions at those sites.

DHARC-JKUAT leads implementation in Kenya while PHP provides EQIS, teaches the method, and supports analysis across all six rounds. Results will be reported after enough rounds have been completed to support a sound comparison.
